What can I do if my NDIS Funding is Reduced?
What can I do if my NDIS Funding is Reduced?
8 August 2023

If your NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) funding is reduced following a review, it can have significant implications for the support and services you receive. Here are some steps you can take if your funding has been reduced after a review.

To reduce the likelihood of a reduction in funding at your review, it is important to take all current reports and evidence that can support the case to maintain the current funding level. However, if there is a reduction, here are some considerations:

  1. Understand the Reasons: Firstly, try to understand the reasons behind the reduction in funding. NDIS reviews consider your current goals, needs, and support requirements. If you disagree with the decision, ask for clarification on why the funding was reduced by contacting your NDIS planner or LAC to discuss the decision and ask for an explanation of the changes. This will give you a better understanding of the factors that led to the reduction.

  1. Request a review: If you believe that the reduction is unfair or not in line with your needs, you have the right to request an internal review of the decision. This must be done within 3 months of the decision, find out more. This process means that a different planner will assess your situation and funding allocation. If you believe that your needs or circumstances have not been adequately considered, you can provide additional information, evidence, or documentation to support your case. This could include medical reports, assessments, or letters from your healthcare professionals.

  1. Advocate for your needs: If you feel that the NDIS decision is not adequately meeting your needs, you can enlist the support of an advocate or seek assistance from disability support organisations. They can help you navigate the process and advocate on your behalf.

  1. Appeal the decision: If the internal review doesn’t result in a satisfactory outcome, you may have the option to appeal the decision externally through the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). An AAT review provides an independent assessment of the decision made by the NDIS. In some cases, mediation might be offered to resolve disputes between participants and the NDIS. This involves a neutral third party helping both sides reach a resolution.

  1. Adjust your supports: If it's not possible to overturn the decision, you may need to reevaluate your support plan and identify ways to manage with the reduced funding. This could involve adjusting services, prioritising essential supports, or seeking additional support from family and community resources.

Need help?

Remember, it's crucial to act promptly and be proactive in addressing any concerns about your NDIS funding to ensure that you receive the appropriate support for your needs. Seeking help from your Support Coordinator, advocacy organisations or your support networks can be beneficial during this process.
