What is STA?

Short term accommodation (STA), commonly referred to as respite, is a form of support and accommodation.  It also includes the cost of food and recreational activities.

Can I use NDIS funds for STA?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can usually fund 28 days total per year, which can be used for up to 14 days at a time. You can use the funding you already have in your Core budget for STA even if it isn’t written in your plan; as long as it fits within your plan budget.  Ask your Plan Manager or Support Coordinator if you need support to see if STA can fit within your budget. STA provides respite for your primary carer to enable sustainability of the relationship.

How long can I stay at STA?

STA usually isn’t suitable for longer stays over 14 days, or if you are waiting for home modifications.  Accommodation options when awaiting home modifications may include Medium Term Accommodation (MTA).

How STA can help?

STA can be a great opportunity to gain some independence and try things you normally wouldn’t do at home.  These can include independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning and laundry.  But it can also include other more exciting recreational activities such as community outings, swimming, fishing and bowling to name a few.  Many participants that access STA together can form life-long friendships.

STA can be a great opportunity to be a stepping stone to moving out of the family home. A few nights every month can be used to start creating the independence and skills to live independently away from the family home.

Can I use STA to go on a holiday?

STA can also be great opportunity to try new things and visit places you wouldn’t usually go to.  Some STA providers in holiday destinations such as the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast will open their doors to people from Brisbane to enjoy respite away from home.  It is important to consider STA is provided to give informal carers (such as mums and dads) a break from caring and isn’t intended to be used to fund a holiday for the whole family to get away.

What makes a good STA provider and what to look out for?

STA is provided based on a ‘ratio of support’ model. This means that the STA provider will determine how many support workers will provide you support and how many other NDIS participants you’ll share this support with.  Ensuring you find a provider that can provide support at a ratio that will support your needs is important to ensure safety and to ensure you don’t over-spend.

Ask your Support Coordinator to help see if STA would be right for you. They can help you to find an STA provider that offers the support you need and helps you do the activities you enjoy.
