Your Guide to Setting NDIS Goals
Your Guide to Setting NDIS Goals
15 July 2024

Setting your NDIS goals is a crucial part of the NDIS and will help you to get the funding for the support that you need. In this article we look at what you need to know about NDIS goals and give you some tips on how to set the right goals for you.

What Are NDIS Goals?

Like other goals that you might set yourself in life, your NDIS goals clarify what you want to achieve and help to keep you on track. They guide you on the journey to achieving what you want in life.

Within the context of the NDIS, your NDIS goals give the NDIA information about what is important to you and the support that you need to live the life that you choose. As such, each of your NDIS goals should include information about the support that you need to meet that goal.

NDIS goals can be physical, social or independence based. They can also be short term goals (that you are working towards over the next 12 months) or medium to long term (that you would like to achieve in the next two to three years).

What Are Some Examples of NDIS Goals?

Your NDIS goals will individual to you, your age, your circumstances, your passions, your disability and your aspirations. There are some examples of short-term NDIS goals for physical, social and independence:

Physical NDIS Goal:
I want to improve my co-ordination and strength to walk independently.

Social NDIS Goal:
I want to increase my confidence to socialise and make new friends and try new things that I haven’t done before.

Independence NDIS Goal:
I want to be more independent in my eating and use cutlery with better control.

What is a SMART Goal?

A SMART goal using a specific framework that can help you to set clear, measurable and meaningful goals. A SMART goal is:

  1. Specific: Clearly defines your goal and focuses on your desired outcome
  2. Measurable: Can be tracked or measured so that you know you are improving
  3. Achievable: Is realistic and achievable for you
  4. Relevant: Aligns with your interests, needs and aspirations
  5. Time-bound: To be achieved within a specific timeframe.

Example of a SMART Goal

By August next year, I will be living independently by developing essential life skills, finding a house share with others my own age and accessing the necessary support services.

6 Tips To Set Great NDIS Goals

  1. Set goals that are achievable, this will help to keep you motivated
  2. Give yourself a realistic timeframe to achieve each goal
  3. Set goals that align with your passions and interests
  4. Break goals into smaller steps and take them one step at a time
